IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
If given certain constraints and criteria can you create a crumple zone that can protect an egg, from a falling water bottle while also staying efficient?
GENERATE IDEAS
-Create a cone
-Weave paper together to make a trampoline like structure
-An Accordion structure
A) Tight Scrunchies
B) Loose Scrunchies
-Pockets filled with "springs"
-Cylinder filled with confetti scraps
-Cube filled with springs

CRITERIA
- Lightweight, how much does it weigh?
-Small/Compact, what is its size?
-Prevents the egg from any cracking
-Simplicity, is it many pieces or a few?
-Good Looking, is it eye pleasing?
-Effectiveness, how often does it work successfully?
-Reproducibility, can someone else make it?
RESEARCH
After researching the best solutions for making a crumple zone I found that cones are the best design . This is because they take the impact given in the point of the cone and send it to its outer edges. Thus, protecting the the egg from being destroyed by the bottles impact. I also looked into basic physics that describe mass X acceleration = impact which may help me create a better solution. I also found multiple sites with people who are trying to solve the same problem.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
The idea above was to make small pockets that we interlace together that help cushion the bottle from collapsing on the egg. It would do this by using air to push out once the bottles hit this crumple zone.
This idea was to create a bucket of some sorts that will hold paper scraps or a confetti material that we will pile up. We based this idea off a pillow in the hopes it would cushion the bottles fall.
This idea was based off an accordion and the strength it takes to push and pull the accordion. With this in mind we hoped that the "accordion" would prevent the bottle from breaking the egg. We also created two versions of this design one that used tight scrunchies or accordion pieces and one that used loose ones in order to find the most productive product.

SUMMARY
The cylinder design tied with the cross fold spring design on the idea matrix, but we left it to a vote where we chose the
cylinder design. To make this solution we will take two strips of vanilla paper that stapled together should measure out to a cylinder with a diameter of 4'. Then I would take two more strips of manilla paper which i strapped to the bottom of the cylinder that would prevent any pieces of confetti of falling out. I used a technical drawing I made myself that gives dimensions, hidden lines, and construct lines. Our alternative plan is to use the loose accordion though it did not get as high a score on the idea matrix. We thought to go with a design we saw work with other groups in the hope that ours will also work.

REDESIGN
The redesign idea was to follow some of our previous crumple zone versions that we had not tested and saw other groups succeeded with. This meant a loose schrunchie accordion like design which ended with similar results. The water bottle ended up decimating the egg with little to no resistance from our crumple zone and leading to an egg- strodinaryily sad ending.
